Our motto "Changing Behavior Through Understanding" reflects the mission of William Gladden Foundation. We believe that knowledge is power - the power to improve behaviors and enhance outcomes. We further believe that when young people, parents, professionals and concerned citizens have the knowledge to combat the many adverse circumstances that threaten the American family and children, the potential to make wise decisions increases, thereby strengthening the entire community.
We live in a society where over half of all children are born to single parents or into marriages that end in divorce. There is no doubt that the rising tide of single-parent households, divorce and family dysfunction carries with it the growing wave of boys and girls whose confused emotions and problem behaviors put them at risk. Changing this destructive trend is the heart of our mission. Family is a sacred institution, the backbone of American society, and our children are telling us through their behaviors that our collective health is in jeopardy.
Drug abuse, crime, delinquency, violence, suicide, dropping out of school, myriad emotional and behavioral disorders are symptoms of much deeper issues, symbolic expressions of confusion and discontent that turn innocent babies into rebellious teens and dissocial adults. Defining the causes of family and childhood dysfunction and emphasizing cures is our purpose. The vision of William Gladden Foundation is to reduce the consequences of ignorance and uncertainty for parents and children by increasing the potential to build healthier families and communities through knowledge.
